A dapper young sparrow was once dressed in his finest black-and-white. He was the most handsome of his kind and when he landed on the ledge of a car window one day, it was much to his surprise that he was confronted by another fine chap who was dressed equally as sharp as he was. ‘I am the most dapper and handsome of my kind,’ he said to the fine young sparrow opposite himself. ‘No, I am.’ replied the other, much affronted. ‘No, I am.’ he said with quite a statement of force once more. ‘Anything you can do I can do better,’ demanded his adversary in front of him. ‘No, anything you can do I can do better!’ he said in return in no uncertain terms. The battle of wills grew so intense that a pecking match ensued between the two dapper young sparrows. They pecked away in fury at each other. Each determined to prove that he was the superior one of the two chaps. The furious pecking clash continued for quite some time with no-one becoming the outright winner, when all of a sudden the front door banged, and the owner of the motorcar stepped out to drive his car to work that morning. This gave the poor old sparrow such a fright that he immediately flew away in shock. Just as he took off in flight, so did his vicious adversary opposite him on the window ledge. They both flew away in a hurry. The owner of the car just laughed at the two little birds. The dapper young sparrow had just been sparring with himself in the rear-view mirror of the car all of the time it seems. There was no-one there after all. It was all in his imagination. Sometimes we fight with no-one at all for no reason whatsoever. Life is funny like that.
