Was an old man
Who suffered from severe pain

He had the same complaint
Told everyone about the pain
Of living
With a life-long wounded knee.


He sustained back when
He had delusions
He could be a football star.

The injury sidelined him
For good

And now, many years later,
He would go to the hospital
Riding the elevator.

But the sudden stop
And floor level differences
Make his knee
Hurt even more.


“God,” he said

“Getting old
Ain’t for wimps.”

And hobbled down
The hall to see
His doctors.

When asked how he was
He always said

“At my age
Any time I wake up
Is a great day
To be alive.”
