The Weakest Ending |
The Weakest Ending Word Count: 171 words The K-drama Sisyphus illustrates many rules of great writing because it violates most of them, turning a decent sci-fi series into an incoherent mess. Despite the fine acting, the actors could not overcome the bad writing, particularly the weak ending scene. The story starts fine – an intriguing premise: a madman grows up wanting to end the world, creates a nuclear weapon, and launches a nuclear war with North Korea, leading to the death of millions. He and his minions survive but manage to go back in time over and over again, as his opponents try to prevent the impending disaster. He and his minions, in the meantime, enrich themselves by winning the lottery, investing in stocks, etc. So far so good. Then, the movie quickly descends into a parody of A Beautiful Mind as the protagonist is depicted as a brilliant scientist undergoing a psychotic breakdown as the nuclear war erupts or perhaps does not erupt – just a product of his diseased mind. The ending makes it clear that this was all just a nightmare. And that is the weakest ending of all, which ultimately makes this series a failure. |
