Flash Fiction:
The Sticky Plan

“Stick to the plan.”

“As if we had a plan…” James said, sarcastically.

“Of course,” Tim said, looking up from the work. “We just haven’t tweaked it yet.

“That’s optimistic…”

“No. Grampa always says that, ‘If it isn’t working you haven’t tweaked it in the right direction.’ He always kept changing things, testing… and he always finished things.”

“He must be amazing.”

“He is. I really want to help him get back in the kitchen. He loves cooking.

“Me too, I can’t wait!”

“Well, you do have to wait… but I think I have this part working now…”

“It looks good, a bit wetter than I expected…”

“Time to find out!”

Janice heard a loud, weird noise in the kitchen. Jumping out of her chair she ran in. There, standing near the microwave was Tim and James. The microwave was open and the entire kitchen had stripes of gooey red all over everything, including the boys.

“What happened?!” she yelled.

“We were just making a pie…” Tim said.

“What kind of a pie?” she asked.

“Tomato!” Tim said, excitedly. “I think I know what we did wrong… we should have cut up the tomatoes.”

“No,” Mom said, you should not have tried to make a tomato pie without talking to me!”

“But Grandpa said…”

Mom cut him off. “Grandpa never had a microwave, and Grandpa is allergic to tomatoes…”

“Oh…” Tim said… “I forgot. Can we try it with apples?”

“You can, after Grandpa gets home, and with him!!!”

“Oh… I wanted to surprise him!”

“He will be completely surprised, because he is going to help you clean this mess up first! And no more cooking without him!”

Later: “See, Gramps, I told you I could get her to let you cook again!”

“You are amazing!” Gramp laughed.
