Life or Death?
Fearless in the Face of Death

There’s a moment, brief and sharp,
When all you feel is a pounding heart.
A flash of motion, a child’s cry,
And without thought, I don’t question why.

I run into the street, no hesitation,
A blur of action, no contemplation.
The cars are coming, the tires scream,
But in my chest, there’s no fear, no dream.

I shield the little ones with my own,
A human shield, flesh and bone.
Their eyes wide, filled with confusion,
But in mine, there’s no illusion.

My body, a wall against the storm,
I stand my ground, despite the swarm.
The screeching brakes, the nearing crash,
I don’t flinch, I don’t dash.

I feel the rush, the life, the risk,
No thought of death, no fear to whisk.
For in that moment, I’m alive,
The need to protect, the need to thrive.

The cars come closer, the sound grows near,
But in my veins, there’s no trace of fear.
The rush of blood, the pulse, the heat,
I’m ready to face whatever I meet.

I hear the horns, I see the glare,
But I don’t care, I’m unaware.
The children safe, I stand my ground,
In that split second, I am found.

I risk it all without a thought,
For a moment of clarity, all I’ve sought.
A life that’s fleeting, a breath so deep,
The promise to protect, a vow to keep.

The world slows down, time feels still,
But I’m steady, a force of will.
The cars stop, the chaos halts,
And I stand, unbroken, amidst the faults.

I’ve touched death, I’ve stared it down,
But in that moment, I wore no crown.
I lived in the rawness of it all,
A brief moment where I stood tall.

The children are safe, they run away,
But I’m left with the cost to pay.
The rush fades, the fear subsides,
But I’ll carry that moment, wherever I hide.

For in the streets, in the heat of night,
I found a courage, a purest light.
And though I risked my life, I stand still,
Knowing, for them, I’d face the kill.
