Danne is in a fix and hopes his neighbor can help 300 words |
Mind Reader Perhaps? Opal Brassie stood with her hands on her hips and looked at Danne Yoder. “I know what you’re thinking!” “Okay, what am I thinking?” “You’re wondering how I got up here.” Opal shook her head. “I’m wondering how you’re gonna get down.” “Don’t worry, I’ll think of something.” “Does the something involve this ladder. You do know it’s broken.” “What do you mean it’s broken? I just thought it had slid to the ground.” “Nope, it’s definitely broken!” “Say, do you have a ladder, neighbor?” “I do, but I don’t think it’s long enough.” “Have you thought of anything clever yet?” Opal asked. “If I had a rope, I could tie it off and swing down like Tarzan.” Opal snorted. “You got any rope?” “Just some clothesline, not sure it would hold you. Come to think of it, I do have an old tire swing. I could tie it to the lowest strong limb. The ropes are new on it. But you’d have to git to it.” Danne looked down from the branch he sat on. He clung harder as he considered. “Well, do you want it?” Danne nodded reluctantly. In a few minutes, Opal was back with the tire swing. Using her shorter ladder, she managed to tie the stout ropes to a large limb. “Okay, Danne! Work your way down slowly.” Danne shook the tree as he made his way down to the swing at a snail’s pace. Opal had laid an old mattress on the ground to try and break his fall. Once he was in the tire, he began to pump. Suddenly he let go, flew past the mattress and landed on the ground. “Thanks for the help, neighbor! Can you do me a favor?” he gasped. “I called 911 already,” Opal replied. |
