The Close Encounter

“Did you make this?”

The voice came from behind Andrea, scaring her! Swirling around there was a boy there, someone she had never seen before.

“You just scared the crap out of me!”

“I’m sorry…I’m new here. I didn’t know people lost crap like that.”

Being the stupidest, most condescending thing, anyone had ever said to Andrea, she got angry. “That is not funny,” she said, “it was downright rude.”

“I thought that was how you start a conversation… a question…”

Suddenly Andrea realized this guy wasn’t actually trying to be funny. He was just clueless, and obviously new here. She humbled.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were new around here. Did you just move in?”

“No, I had to stay very still. This is my first time alone.”

“Alone? But you’re still a kid! You can’t live alone.”

“Oh, I don’t live here. It’s just a visit. I only graduated a while ago. MaDee gave me this trip as a present.”

“Oh, is MaDee your mother?”

He laughed. “No, I don’t have a mother. MaDee is my teacher. I bet you have a mother though.”

“Well, yes, I do. I’m sorry you don’t have one. Do you know why?”

“Nobody has a mother where I come from.”

Somewhat shocked at that statement Andrea said. “Oh, I’m sorry! Are you in an orphanage?”

“No, just a regular spaceship…”

Now realizing he was trying to be a grand storyteller and Andrea was the pigeon, Andrea got angrier.

“Listen you jerk,” she said, “I don’t know what you’re up to but I’m not buying it! Go away!”

“OK,” he said. But as he lifted both arms and rose into the air, becoming invisible in seconds, she heard him mumble “Wow, I thought Earth beings were supposed to be friendly…”
