December Twenty-Six

December twenty sixth, poor old December twenty sixth. It can never get ahead of the twenty fifth. Stuck forever as the biggest let-down day. Christmas over, a whole year till the next one and here it is. Poor old December twenty sixth.

Those who actually got what they really wanted, few and far between, are so happy! Though… there were other things they also wanted… Those who got what the givers got, trying to seem excited, or if very young, trying not to cry. But most getting at least one thing that was worth the anticipation.

Kids, of course, on top of the world! A bunch of brand-new things to play with! A train track, a monkey, maybe even a violin (real, or kid version) Happy parents! Cookies and candy sitting on tables with nobody watching! It is still Christmas for them. Santa came!!!

And the parents enjoying every moment as the kids open presents. Then it’s, get ready for the company coming through the gate, or be the company! Enjoy a wonderful, special dinner with family and friends! Food, catch up chit chat, more presents!

Everybody goes to bed exhausted with pleasure, delight, Christmas! Then they wake up to December twenty-six. Still winter, still cold, no school, though workers have to go back to work. All the joy and excitement running through all the brains. But dragging it’s over, it’s gone, another three hundred and sixty-four days till it comes again. The presents still exciting, but now known and being graded… ‘Another six pairs of socks? Does she not have any imagination?’ ‘I really hoped I’d get a train this year…’ whatever.

A let down day for sure. And four more days before New Years. Everyone rallies eventually. It all works out. Well, everyone, except poor old December twenty-sixth.
