Surprise “There’s a rumor going around.” “Tell me!” Jane said. “I can’t,” Jeff said. “What? I’m your girlfriend! Why won’t you tell me??” “I haven’t heard what it is.” “Huh?” “I see it getting passed, sneakily, but when I try to find out what it is, I just get the run around.” “That’s weird…” “I thought maybe you could get it.” “Of course! Tell me who to ask!” “Well, I saw Will whispering to Alice, he probably told her…?” Off she went. Twenty minutes later she came back, “I tried six different people and got nothing!” she said, “What could it be that we can’t know about it! I wanted to strangle Lois, she usually tells me, and everyone else, everything!” “Well, I give up,” Jeff said, “We’ll just have to wait and see if we get any clues. I never cared if I didn’t get told secrets before, but this time it’s bugging me!” “Yeah, me too. It must be about us, or one of us, or our family or something. Nobody is telling us because at least one of us is involved in the secret.” “Huh, I suppose you’re right. Have we done anything sneaky or stupid or illegal lately?” “No, you jerk. I think we would know… well, except for the stupid part…” they both laughed. Later when they got to Jane’s house, “Let’s go around to the back door so I can let Pokey in.” Off they went. “Surprise!” all their friends yelled, as they walked in the back yard! And, “Happy Birthday Jeff!” Jane said. “You knew? But my birthday isn’t till next month!” “That’s the surprise! I knew if I waited till next month, you wouldn’t be surprised!” For the next seventy years Jeff had two birthday parties, and every one, with Jane. |
