“Look!” Jane said, “There’s something in our window well!”

“How can you tell? It’s dark.”

“Dad left the light on, I saw it, look.”

Jared looked, “What is it?”

“Stuck probably, it’s deep. It probably jumped in to stay warm.”

“How can that be warm?”

“It’s the living room window well, the living room is heated enough that the snow hasn’t piled up in there and it’s tall enough that the wind doesn’t blow in. I think it’s something furry…”

“I meant what is it?”

“Something, maybe a squirrel, a chipmunk?”

“Oh, it must be cold even with a fur coat on...”

“Well, there’s nothing we can do. If we try to pull it out it’ll panic. It’s too dark. We can go out first thing tomorrow and put a board in, it could climb up.”

“What if it’s looking for food, now it’s stuck, and cold and hungry…”

“I don’t know!”

“Well,” Jared said, “we could toss some food in there…”

“If it sees us, it’ll be scared!

“We could toss it down from upstairs. It would think the wind blew it in.”

“Good plan!” Up they went. However, the first thing they realized was it was really windy. The chunks of bread blew away before they hit ground. Determined to feed this cold unknown critter they tried a few other things, but those blew away too. Finally, Jared pulled out his fishing pole.

“What are you doing?” Jane asked.

“Fishing backwards!” he said, tying an apple to the line, he lowered it down and pulled it back, until it fell into the window well. Minutes later they could see the animal pulling it apart.

“You saved it’s life!” Jane said loudly. Which was exactly when they found out the critter they just saved, was a skunk…
