How it works “We’re almost there.” Ted whispered. Jean looked at him with distain. “Where we are going? I just need the book!” Ted didn’t answer, and he stopped walking, “Shhh” he whispered again. “Somebody’s watching us.” Jean looked at him with distain, “You really are nuts. Why would anybody be watching us?” “I don’t know. I just know we are being watched…” “Ted! You told me I could borrow your math book. All I want is to do my homework but I forgot my math book! This isn’t a mystery, there isn’t anyone following us or spying on us. This is your house, you live here. Unfortunately, you are the only kid in the neighborhood who has the same math book or I would be borrowing one from someone else, I promise you! I just need it for half an hour. Just let me borrow your math book for half an hour!! I will never forget my math book again!” “Shhhhh!” Ted whispered back. Jean had had enough. “Never mind! I will take the zero for not doing my homework! It’s better than having to talk to you. You’re crazy!” she stomped off to her own house. Ted watched her go. As soon as she went in and slammed the door, he burst out laughing. “Hey!” came a voice from around the corner of the house. “I didn’t get to do any noises!” “Sorry,” Ted laughed, “I didn’t know she was so serious. Like who asks to borrow a math book!” “She’ll likely never speak to you again.” “Who cares!” Ted laughed, “she’s just a girl.” Ted regretted that when they turned fourteen, and he finally realized girls were girls. His biggest crush was Jean. Five years later she finally gave in and dated him. They got married at twenty-three. |
