The Path

Running around the path, next to the track at our town high school. Well, walking fast… best I can do. When I started this, I’d asked my doctor if it was a good idea. (He had implied that I wasn’t getting enough exercise! Apparently, none, also equals ‘not enough’…)

I’d told him I kept quite busy cleaning, taking care of my house, my dog, and my yard work… Apparently, he’s known me for too long. He knows I live alone, not much house to clean. My dog is fifteen years old, and walks slowly around in the back yard for exercise. And my beautiful gardens and lawn, consist of a few perennials, and a lawn service.

He, politely, told me I needed a bit more. He was the one who told me about the path. Well, he told me about the “track.” But the track is always being used by healthy people doing their run when the school isn’t using it. I felt like an old broken-down car that everyone had to veer around when they came up behind me. I never could get up to the speed limit. So, I switched to the path.

So far since, I have noticed a number of others found this switch to be quite nice also. We can walk slow, no traffic to watch out for, and nobody wishing we’d stop being in their way. I’ve actually gotten to know quite a few of them, and I regularly walk with Anna now, we have a lot in common, even though we’d never met until now. I didn’t know exercise could be so much fun!

And, my doctor was right, exercise has changed my life for the better. I even smile more, especially when listening to Anna complain about her husband…

Life is good.
