In my childhood, the days before we stopped using firecrackers for environmental reasons.
"Ma'am, come quickly, come quickly," the caretaker urged. He stopped next to my mother, out of breath. He had obviously been running.

"What's the matter?"

"There's a leopard in the back garden."

At this, everyone guffawed. The family was gathered together for Diwali and there were fireworks going off. Even though the house separated the front garden (where we were) from the back, still - what wild animal would venture close to such disturbance?

We celebrated, then, untroubled, had dinner and went to sleep.

The next day, the caretaker took Mom to the back garden. There were distinct paw marks visible.
