“Do you need help?”

The voice came from behind me. My situation flashed through my head. I did not, absolutely not, need any help!

Granted, I was in a pickle. I rarely drive anymore. But I’m not that old! Just old enough that getting a ride is more comfortable. Someone else maneuvering the car, the traffic, how to get there. I could do it. It just takes longer and other drivers are scary sometimes, or mean. I don’t know how many glares I’ve gotten when I pull over and let people zoom by. Where do the need to be at ten miles an hour over the speed limit anyway!

This time I wasn’t driving. I’d been sitting on a bench waiting for a friend to show up. We were going shopping together. My son dropped me here, Rose was coming from Medway so this was a better place for her to pick me up. But after Tim left, Rose called, she couldn’t come, an emergency at home. So, I got out my phone to call Tim back.

Well, it slipped, and went toward one of those rain drains on the street! Didn’t fall in, just hovered at the edge. I had to get it quickly! I got down on my hands and knees, to keep my balance as I crawled over. Just as I got there, the voice.

I had to respond… giving in, I went for the truth. “My phone is about to fall into the sewer grate. I’m sneaking up on it.”

Poor choice of words, I talk mostly to grand-children nowadays… but the laugh that came out of that stranger made my day!

I got my phone back; he got my phone number. We are both single. And he’s picking me up at six… Woo woo, indeed!
