Jean Smiled

“I don’t like this place…” Jean said.

“What? Are you afraid of the woods?” Sam shot back, smirking.

“No, I just think this place is too dark. It’s like a forest in there. We could go somewhere else?”

“Like where? We just need leaves, there is no other woods except the puny one by the school. If I don’t show up with a bunch of different kinds of leaves, I can’t do the project and I’ll get a zero!”

“You asked me to help. But, if it’s so important to get them here, you can go get them. I’m not going in there!”

“Come on! Are you afraid of a bunch of trees?”

“No.”

“Well, what’s the problem?”

“If you must know, here are ghosts in there.”

“Pffft! Give me a break! There’s no such thing as ghosts.”

“Yes, there are, and one of them is angry with me.”

“A ghost is angry with you? Why?” he laughed.

“None of your business. But, since you’re being so snotty… now, there’s a ghost that’s angry with you too!”

“Pffft!” he said, laughing. Then suddenly he started shrinking. Just before he shrunk past her knees, he yelled, “Help!!!”

“Do you still want to go into that woods?”

“NO! no!”

In an instant he was back to normal, as if nothing had happened.

“So,” Jean said, “Do you want to try the woods next to the school?”

“Ah…. Yes? I think that’s a good idea?” he said, hesitantly, looking at he confused.

“Good, let’s go,” she started walking.

Sam followed, “Ah, Jean?”

“What?”

He looked at her, then at himself… then he shook his head, and kept on walking. “Nothing, never mind…” and he shook his head one more time, and silently kept on walking.

Jean smiled.
