Tomorrow

Tomorrow

“Tomorrow will be a better day,” Mom said softly.

Lilly had been crying since she got home. Brad broke up with her. Mom had tried comforting her, but she knew there would be no comforting. Lilly was fourteen. Mom had been fourteen once, she still remembered.

Lilly cried harder.

“Life will be good again,” Mom said again. “Why don’t you go lay down for a while.”

Lilly went to her room, crying the whole way. Later, Mom peaked through the door opening. Lilly had apparently cried herself to sleep. Slipping in, Mom pulled a blanket over her and left, whispering “Tomorrow will be a better day,” as she softly closed the door.

Laying in her bed, eyes closed, Lilly had just been pretending to be asleep, she didn’t want to talk about it with Mom. How could Mom understand? Mom was old, and married! Lilly eventually did fall asleep still crying softly.

In the morning she woke, immediately thinking of Brad, and feeling terrible. But she was done crying. Thank goodness it was Saturday, no school. She saw that it was very light out, looking at the clock, it was almost nine. Her mother must have let her sleep. Hearing something outside, she got up and walked slowly over to the window. The first thing that caught her eye was the sunflower, it had finally bloomed! She smiled; she’d been waiting for so long. She actually forgot about Brad for a moment. She heard that noise again.

Beyond their yard there was a big truck, apparently, someone was finally moving into the house next door. As she stood watching, a boy, about her age, wandered up to the truck. He was really cute!

And suddenly, just like Mom said, life was good again.
