Noises in the night turn out to be something...or do they?
Thump, Thump, Thump…

I sat up in bed and stared out into my dark room, my crusty eyes as big as saucers.

There was an orange glow coming from the hallway.

What in the world? Was I still asleep?

Then I heard, “thump, thump, thump…” coming down the tiled hall floor.

“Something humungous this way cometh,” I said to no one and then giggled.

This had to be a dream. I pinched myself. “Ouch!” No, not a dream.

The orange glow was getting brighter. I hurried to the door and sneaked a peek around the corner of the oak frame.

A huge, glowing being (monster???) was coming toward me. “Thump, thump, thump, thump, thump…”

This hump-backed, hairy thing was making strange wailing sounds as it limped toward me.

My house is a hoarded mess. Perhaps he/she/it stepped on a shard of debris… Anyway, this “thing” was almost to my bedroom door.

Hands firmly planted on my nightgown-clad hips, I yelled, “STOP,” as I closed my eyes to keep from being blinded by the orange glow.

“STOP,” I yelled again, and meant it, even though I was frightened to death. I had never meant anything more in my entire forty-four years. Never!

The monster vanished into thin air! The hallway was dark again.

He/She/It wouldn’t dare return, or he/she/it would be sorry.

I climbed back into bed.

I need to use my “I mean business” voice more often. Heck, yes!
