My Soul I’ll Not Bare

It was early, far too early to be awake.
My initial thought was, ‘Give me a break!’
Some noise had woken me, that’s all I knew
Now I wondered, was it finally through?

My "Sleepy eyes peek through the blinds at something wrong”
I found I didn’t need to, someone banged a gong!
Whoever it was, started singing a song.
T’was beautiful, but…. the sun hadn’t yet come along.

I finally fell back asleep, my dreams were strange,
A song filled my mind, the words never changed
An earworm repeating, that’s what it was
‘By The Time’ played in my sleep, without a pause.

Finally I slept the sleep of the dead
Yet that song kept playing in my head
I woke up refreshed, with my mind now clear
She had left long ago, leaving me alone here

Now I find I’m happy living alone
In this ramshackle place I call home
No one understands, nor seems to care
All’s well though, for my soul I’ll not bare
