An Open Mind

I often go out walking
around my neighborhood.
I like to think it clears my head
and does my heart some good.

I saw a guy fly-fishing
right in his own front yard.
I wondered if he’s catching fish.
I’d guess that would be hard.

But then I saw him wind up
and give another try.
So I just cast my eyes on down
and quickly passed him by.

Hey, maybe it’s just practice.
I hope that’s all it was.
And who am I to question why
or what somebody does?

I have my own behaviors
that you may think are strange.
Sure, maybe there are many things
you’d think I ought to change.

We all should be less hurtful
and keep an open mind.
In fact, we’d all be better off
if we could be more kind.

I hope it isn’t just me
who’s having thoughts like that,
‘cause based on what I heard back there
he’s hooked his neighbor’s cat.
