Flash Fiction |
The Beginning “Where’s my brush?” Bella said, out loud. “It’s always here…” then, this time, “it has been stolen!” trying to make a mystery out of it. She just could not seem to write a mystery no matter how hard she tried. Suddenly she heard something under her bed. A bit nervous, she tip-toed over and lifted the edge of the bedspread, peeking underneath. Unfortunately, the underneath was stuffed to the gills with stuff. Stuff to keep, stuff that got pushed under by accident and, of course, stuff that got pushed under when her mother told her to clean her room. Well, there was no way to find out unless she moved the stuff out. With no other plans, she gave in. Better to do this than have a mouse in her room. An hour later all the stuff was out from under her bed, pushed all around the room. Bella, herself, was still under the bed, checking the corners in case she missed something, when Mom came in. “Bella!” she yelled, not knowing Bella was actually in the room, “you need to clean your room, today!” “I am cleaning it!” Bella yelled from under the bed. “Oh, such a good girl!” Mum said, “When you’re done, let’s go for ice cream!” “Great!” Bella said, forgetting that under the bed was now the only clean spot. Then she turned to get back out, and there was the mouse! “Will you bring me some?” the mouse said in perfect English. “Ah… Yes?” Bella squeaked back, suddenly feeling oddly protective of this tiny creature, who talked. “By the way, you’re late for school.” the mouse said. Bella woke up. But now Bella had a plan, she immediately decided to write a story about a girl and a mouse, maybe many stories, and she did. |
