Frank’s Halloween

A small silver dragon was at the door. Frank watched him, holding the almost empty candy bowl in his hands.

He’d been so good, doing the job Alice left him to do when she got called to her mother’s to help. Alice’s mother lived on a very busy Halloween street, and was getting along in years. He understood. He and Alice lived on a spooky looking street, few houses, no streetlights. They’d only had a few Trick or Treaters all night.

Unfortunately, Frank had been sampling the treats as the evening wore on, and now there was only one bar left. He’d been on his way to turn off the front light when he glanced out the window and saw the little dragon.

He couldn’t turn off the light with the little bugger right there, but he really wanted that bar. As he passed the kitchen doorway he quickly grabbed a can sitting on the counter.

Opening the door, a little voice squeaked out “Trick or Treat!”

“Trick!” Frank said, holding his hands behind, then “Pick one!” Of course, in one there was the bar, in the other, a can of green beans.

The dragon looked a bit puzzled. But then went along. Thinking a minute, he picked the arm holding the candy.

Frank tried to switch hands quickly, but dropped everything on the porch.

“Woo woo!” said the dragon. Green beans too!!” and he grabbed both, and raced off down the sidewalk.

Frank just stood there. Alice would be home soon. As he turned off the front light he suddenly remembered why the green beans were there... Alice was making green bean casserole for her Lady’s Lunch tomorrow.

Halloween just wasn’t any fun anymore, he thought, as he drove to the grocery store (which turned out to be closed...)
