Jason, the Dog Rescues Sam Adams for Writer's Cramp

311 words

Sam Adams was not a dog person, not at all. He was more of a cat person but he and his wife, Maria Lee, did not have any pets until she was stationed in the army in San Antonio, and he was stationed overseas in Bangkok and then DC with the State Department.

He was visiting her on leave when they went to the pound and fell in love with a dog they called Jason. Jason had been abused and left for dead by his former owner, a meth addict who was in prison. His dogs were sent to the rescue facility.

It took a while for the dog to adapt to his new home and his new circumstances, but he did. Just before he had to return to his assignment, Sam and his wife had worked out that she would join him after six months in DC. Sam was prepared to go back when he went jogging early one morning and fell down a ledge he had not seen in the dark, breaking his heel in a thousand places.

They rushed him to the military base, where he had had the first of what would become 14 operations as he developed a drug-resistant staph infection. He ended up spending four months recovering, and Jason was his constant companion. They bonded as dogs and humans sometimes do. Sam often wondered who rescued who? And later spent several months in the hospital battling the infection that almost killed him.

And told Jason that he was glad they had found him. Sam has all his secrets with Jason who seems to understand him, looking at him with deep soulful eyes. He was truly a special dog.

When he returned to DC with his wife, they had to leave Jason behind because they knew that they would have constant TDYs in their new assignments.

Based loosely on a true story that occurred in 1994-95.
