A draft for a short story I'm working on. Let me know what you think so far! |
“Pick a card, any card!” Said the magician, holding out a glowing deck of cards to the audience member. As the attractive young female reached for the card, a subtle color change in one of the cards appeared to her, and she reached for the slightly different one. Even real magicians take the quick way out every once in awhile. “Now remember that card, because it’s about to disappear out of your very hands!” The magician did exactly what he said he would do, with a mix of mild prestidigitation and cartomancy, and just a sprinkling of eccentric showmanship. The paid assistant he had made out to be an audience member however looked bored. Green eyes scanned the actual audience, looking for something interesting. Her eyes landed on a strapping young man, known around town for being her no-good lover Johnny. You see, Penny and Johnny were your characteristic Bonny and Clyde. Petty crime was the name of the game, though Penny was a bit more straight cut then the dark haired Johnny. Don’t tell her that, though, or she’ll do her best to show him up in the most outrageous way possible. That’s how the old police station caught on fire “accidentally”. Penny wasn’t the type to hurt anybody though, and would rather die then hurt a mere fly. Johnny was trying to break her of that sentiment, but wasn’t making much headway. After the show, the two met up behind the old, sketchy theater. “Hey sweets, good performance!” Johnny demurred with a smirk. “Oh don’t tease.” Penny shoved him gently with a small smile. “Now what’s that sad look for huh?” “I don’t think he’s gonna accept me as his apprentice Johnny-” Penny fretted, “In fact I think I’m about to be fired.” Johnny feigned a shocked look, and coughed into his arm to hide his chuckle. “Baby cakes, you’re a terrible assistant. Now don’t be upset, but I think there’s better options for you.” He shrugged, pointing to himself. “You know I’d employ you in a heart beat.” Penny gave him a deeply incredulous look, and said: “Johnny, my love, I’d rather die then work in your little gang. Rather. Die.” While the two were arguing over whether or not Penny should join Johnny’s “little gang”, the magician had been artfully listening in the shadows. He had been waiting all evening for his familiar to show up, since his spell had backfired and he wasn’t even sure his Remy would make an appearance in the first place, and was just entranced with the odd couple. Dartanion was a lonesome man, six foot even with a stubble, and was a cool and collected twenty four. He was quite sure he’d find love someday, but so far had not even experienced the tender loving of a woman even once. He had gotten close, but a certain member proved to be against him, and the endeavor left both unsatisfied. |
