The Call

“I’m ready, let’s go.”

“What do you think of this color?”

“Ah...” said Frank, “It’s fine, it’s a color... it looks great on you.”

“I know,” said Susan, “but do you think it’s appropriate for this occasion?”

Frank frowned, “This occasion? It’s dinner...”

“But dinner with important people.”

“Bill and Janice are important?”

“Frank, he’s your boss now!”

“And, I’ve known him since fifth grade. Nothing has changed, he just got a promotion.”

“But a promotion to being your boss...”

“We don’t have time for this. Bill is the same Bill he always was. He’s a nerd, a smart nerd, but just a dorky nerd just like he was in fifth grade.”

“He’s your boss now... you can’t call him a dork.”

“Oh?” he took out his phone.

“What are you doing?” asked Susan.

Holding up a finger to tell her to wait, he turned it on to speaker. Bill answered. “Hello”

“Bill, just a question. Are you a dork?”

“Yes??? Why are you asking?”

“Are you going to still be a dork even now that you’re the boss?”

“Pretty sure...”

“Just checking, we’ll meet you a Harvey’s.”

“Thank goodness! I was afraid you were canceling and I’d have to eat Janice’s food again. Woah! She just threw a pan at me,” he said laughing. “See ya!”

“So,” Frank said, “are you comfortable wearing that dress now?”

“Do boys ever grow up?”

“I don’t think so.”

The night was a rousing success, and the years beyond as well.
