Flash Fiction
That Night

“Jeff, what are you doing in the kitchen?” Mom asked.

“I don’t know,” five-year-old Jeff said.

“Were you hungry, thirsty?”

“I don’t know...”

“Why did you come in the kitchen, in the dark.”

“I don’t know. I don’t remember anything...”

“Well where were you last, before you got into the kitchen?”

“In my room playing with my truck.”

“OK, then what happened?”

“I was in the kitchen and you turned on the light.”

“You were sleepwalking my friend!” Mom said.

“Sleepwalking? How do you know?”

“Because you’ve done it before.”

“Oh! That’s cool!” off he went, back to his bedroom.

When he got there, he crawled under his bed. “It worked perfectly,” he said.

“Told ya! We better be more careful though, she’s not going to believe it every time.”

“Well as I get older, won’t I get better at making up stories?”

“Yes! You’re right! I keep forgetting you’re still a child, you’ll grow up!”

“What about you? Toys don’t grow up do they?”

“No, but Blazarts can morph into anything. When you’re too old for the toy car, I’ll transfer over to something else of yours. You, of course, have to stay a human for the entire assignment.”

“I bet you’ll have more fun...” Jeff said.

“Not the way I heard it. You just don’t remember because you’re using a human brain and it’s only five years old.”

“You do?”

“Somebody on the team has to, and don’t ask, I can’t tell you stuff!”

“Why not?”

“Because you are an alien on earth, and while we’re here you’re this you, and right now you are only five years old.”

“Smarty pants!”

“No pants on a toy car kiddo! Get with the program!”

They both laughed, and laughed, and together, they finally went to sleep.
