Another “Don’t ignore me.” Sandy looked at the small boy in the doorway. “Then go away...” she said. “Nobody else can see me,” said Rasp. “And I don’t want to. Go away” “But nobody hears me either. You’re the only one I’ve found in all this time!” “All how much time?” Sandy said, dryly. “I don’t know. A long time.” “Well, where we’re you before?” “With my family.” “I don’t understand, why aren’t you in your room?” “I’m looking for my family. I got separated from them. I know they’ll come back for me. But I’m so lonely. You’re the first being that could hear me.” “Being?” “I don’t know what to call you. You’re so different from the little creepy things or the jumpy furry ones. Hey, I like your house!” “It’s not my house, it’s a hospital.” “You’re sick?” “Yes, very sick. That’s why I’m hallucinating. That’s why I’m seeing you.” “Pffft. I’m not a hallucination! I’m just from Zortog! Hang on, we’re pretty good at sick.” He closed his eyes and said some quiet words. “I’ll come back in a little while,” off he went. Sandy’s illness took a turn for the better, very quickly. Three months later she tested clear, and got to go home. Still weak though, she was resting in her room when the small boy appeared in her doorway again. “You’re back. Am I getting sick again?” she said, frightened. “No, I cured you! I was just waiting to see if it worked. So this is where you really live? I like it.” “They haven’t come for you yet then?” “No, but soon. Mom said a few years, maybe fifty.” “Do you want to stay with me? I kind of owe you one.” “Yes,” he said, “definitely yes!” And another dynamic duo was formed. |
