Daily Walk

Daily walk, how I hated it. Unfortunately, at my age you gotta do something. The knees won’t let me run. The introversion rules out a gym or some local class. Evil small talk, I hate it. Mostly because I stink at it. Awkward.

That day on Gray Road because I got a late start and the traffic had already gotten thick on Winter. Winter has a nice sidewalk, Gray is more woodsy and no sidewalk at all. There are only a few houses, mostly woods. Its nice, but sidewalks are nice too.

I was actually starting to get into the quiet, and the green, when I got a small rock in my shoe. Another issue with no sidewalks, the edges of the road are always crumbly.

There was no place to sit except the ground. So, I walked into the woods a bit, to get away from the occasional cars, and sat down to deal with my shoe.

Hearing a rustle I looked up, hoping for a squirrel, hoping not a skunk, and I swear I looked directly into the eyes of a small green dragon!

We both froze. Oddly enough, neither seemed in fear. I certainly didn’t feel afraid. I’m not sure, but I think I thought I was hallucinating. It’s not uncommon at my age.

After a long moment, I snapped out of the surprise and just said a soft “Hello there,” hoping to hold the hallucination, because it was so incredible.

The dragon smiled. It was the biggest brightest smile, it just warmed my whole being. And then, it shimmered and slowly vanished before my eyes.

I have never seen it again. I walk there daily now, just in case. And, I always imagine my dragon is watching over me. It makes me very happy.
