Win, win

“This is just a coincidence.”

“Harold, do you actually know the meaning of the word coincidence?” Mrs. Breck asked calmly.

“Of course,” twelve year old Harold said to his teacher, “it’s when things happen that seem like you made them happen but you didn’t.”

“That’s a good explanation. Now can you tell me how this situation fits into that category?”

“Well, you gave us the assignment to write a story about some animals for Monday. So we had all weekend. But, Friday night was the big last episode of River Monsters so everybody was watching that. Then we had a game on Saturday and Saturday night was the carnival. Then it rained on Sunday.”

“I still fail to understand how this happened,” she said, holding out a pile of papers.

“Well, like I said, it rained on Sunday. It rained like crazy, and we had a big full weekend and we were all tired and I guess we all watched the movie because it came on right after lunch.”

“The movie...”

“Flying Rats from Space.”

“So eight of the boys and six of the girls in this class all wrote a story about rats who fly without any of you knowing any of the other of you were also writing about rats that fly?”

“Apparently.”

“You may go,” Mrs. Breck said. Harold hurried away.

In the teacher’s room, Mrs. Breck was telling her co-workers the story.

“Do you believed him?” Janice asked.

“I don’t even care if it’s true,” Mrs. Breck laughed, “it certainly made my day, and it will undoubtably make an interesting chapter in the book I’m trying to write to boot! Win,win!
