You’re imagining things

“Quick, come see what’s in the yard!” Joe shouted to me while I was in the kitchen.

I dropped the towel and hurried out the door.

“What? What’s in the yard?”

Nothing to see. Just Joe on the porch.

“It was here just a moment ago. Wait, maybe it’ll come back.”

“What did you see?” I looked over the porch rail, into the bushes. I looked beyond the trees to the street. Nothing.

“I saw a White Rabbit. It was running by, checking a watch,” Joe pointed into the yard.

“A rabbit? Carrying a watch? You’re imagining things. What did you have on TV last night?” I went back in the house.

Joe followed me. He was determined to have me believe.

“I really did see this White Rabbit. It was tall, dressed in a suit coat, carrying a big watch. He kept saying, ‘I’m late, I’m late!’ And then it ran down the street.”

The dishes sat in the sink. They’re calling my name. Two can play at this game, I thought.

“Right, just like the pots and pans in the sink here. They’re saying, ‘Wash us, wash us.’ Grab a dishrag. Help with this mess.”

We almost had the dishes done when there was a knock on the door.

Standing there was a woman dressed up like a Red Queen. I stared at her.

“Pardon me, have you seen a White Rabbit?”

“Excuse me?” My mind told me ‘You’re imagining things.’ This must be a dream. “Um, no, but my son did. A little while ago.”

The Red Queen stomped off the porch. The last I saw of her, she was marching down the street yelling at the top of her lungs, “Off with his head!”

Now I’ll just go back inside, pretend this never happened. Craziness.
