When the carousel over the crib started rewinding itself, I very slowly backed out of Glady’s room. I could tolerate finding my underwear all over the floor and my suits turned inside out and rehung, but watching the carousel rewind itself was more than I could deal with. Lyndsey was a powerful witch, and our baby inherited that power. A bit much for a reasonably good Catholic to understand, but if God created everything he had a reason for them.

“Ian? What are you doing?”

“Have you seen her rewind the carousel? It got too me and I had to leave.”

“Yeah, but backing out of our daughter’s room with that look on your face isn’t good.”

“What look? It was a show of healthy respect for that power. It’s kind of scary knowing what it could do... to me!”

“Looked like terror to me. She won’t hurt you, but she will screw with you.”

“And you think it’s funny! My underwear on the floor all the time, my ties are all... it takes me minutes to untie them for work. The other day all my suits were turned inside out and rehung. That took me over an hour.”

“I’ll talk to her. I already have about hurting things and people—“

“Especially me, I am her father. I think.”

“Do not go there.”

“I know she’s mine, you told me, but if she’s half me why is she so powerful? And so soon.”

“The power doesn’t work that way. You either have it or you don’t.”

“Do you think you can get her to stop the messing with my clothes?”

“Yes. I’ll show her the better path.”

“I love you, Lyndsey.”

“Pick up your underwear.”

“Yes, dear.”

“Tread carefully there... I’m a witch too.”

“I do remember that.”
