A poem about remembering a time gone by
Tired old fingers flick through the photograph album
Pausing to reminisce on a lost childhood
Days of summer sunshine, filled with laughter
Racing scooters along deserted streets
Kicking footballs against the wall,
Terrified the neigbour would catch you
On a daring raid to retrieve a lost ball
Sneaky nights under covers,
Torchlight shines on latest comic book heroes
Wondering why we had endless schooldays
Yet a six week summer holiday was gone in a flash
Now, as I sit here staring out across the park
Watching the kids laughing on the swings
Spinning themselves dizzy on the roundabout
Clambering the twisted climbing frames
I feel a desperation to reclaim my youth
To feel the adrenalin pump again
Through these exhausted veigns
To feel the innocense of childhood once more
And delay the process of middle-ageing
Deep in thought, another page of life slowly turns
And I smile, as I realise tomorrow's news
Is next week's history and a future nostalgia
