Makes Sense

“I don’t get it,” said Reed, walking with the group.

“What’s to get? It’s orders.” Sid snapped back. “Why do you question everything?”

“Because I want to understand.”

“To get to the other side!”

“But what’s there? Why hasn’t anyone ever come back from the other side and told us?”

“Who would come back from wonderfulness? We were lucky to get picked. Count your blessings. Stick to the plan!”

“I suppose... So, we jump in and swim over and get out at wonderfulness, is that right?”

“Darn right, now pay attention we’re almost at the edge.”
...
High on a snow-covered hill nearby, General Kent and his second in command were watching.

“It hurts my heart,” General Kent said.

“It has to be done,” Lansing replied, “You know we can’t support this population through another winter. This way they die a noble death while thinking they are going someplace better. Maybe they do go someplace better...”

“I hope that’s true...” the general said as tears fell from his eyes. “There they go.” The two watched as the line of troopers jumped over the cliff and fell into the icy sea water below.
...
Suddenly Reed woke up, he was sitting next to Sid, but it didn’t look like Sid. Before he could speak a voice came overhead, a voice they couldn’t ignore.

“You all have made the greatest sacrifice, and to reward you, you each get to choose the next life you live.”

Albert, God’s new assistant, whispered quietly, “They get to pick anything? Aren’t some lives, like humans for instance, a bit complicated for a soul who has just lived as a lemming?”

“They do all right. Plus, why do you think the world is so full of people who blindly follow any idiot who chooses to lead them?”
