This was a poem I wrote before I went into the Navy. |
I CAN DO THIS As I stand in this room Red carpet, wooden walls And the only furniture being A podium and flags I think back to a poster "Do you have what it takes to fill this uniform?" I jump, Will she move SMACK I did it But of all four volleyball squads Squad C-Blue Team Won all OUR games I CAN DO THIS TAP TAP TAP I hear the rhythm my shoes make Against the gravel track-and nothing else I look around - No one in sight I run- Past my friends shouting their encouragement Past my foes shouting their disappointment Through the finish line first "Do you have what it takes to fill this uniform?" It's quiet, I'm at the plate, bat in hand Helmet on my head, my hat under that The pitcher throws With a PING from my bat It flew straight into her head She screamed and ducked I know we won but I don't remember beyond that point I CAN DO THIS It was high in the air Above my head Go to the ball not Letting the ball come to you I took off after it And gave it all my force It hit POP square onto My racket "Do you have what it takes to fill this uniform?" Back to that room I stand shoulders back Head up, chin parallel to the floor Elbows in, feet shouders width apart Hands in the small of my back My right loosely holding my left I WILL DO THIS I CAN DO THIS "I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; That I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the order of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the regulations and the uniform code of military justice, SO HELP ME GOD." |
