A summer picnic on the Fourth of July (contest entry).
"A Celebration in a Field of Clover"

As an invitation,
you placed my hand in yours.
Our bare feet left the shady picnic blanket
and reed-woven basket empty of bread, cheese,
and two Mason jars of sweet tea.
Taking a stroll, stepping into an ankle high grassy field,
a soft, cool, green dampness soothed body and soul.
White and red clover tickled when caught between toes.
Whispered giggles escaped,
careful not to disturb the tiny yellow and black-striped
fairy-bee song and their flitting dance,
buzzing their busy work-blues.
Sun soon sang sayonara.
Continuing the summer celebration,
bee-cousins, firefly-fairies lit up the darkened backdrop
with tiny lanterns blinking a romantic coded message;
a prelude to the sky's explosion.
A kaleidoscope burst repeatedly.
As a token of my love,
I placed my hand in yours.
