For Edwin Morey
I couldn't go,
I refused to.
It was selfish of me
I know.
I wouldn't bring myself,
to remember you
like so.

They say
the service was beautiful,
and many people
did share,
but they were shocked
by my absence,
and why I wasn't there.

I could have made an appearance;
standing there
at my mother's side.
I could have,
should have,
but didn't.
All because I lied.

Excuses, there were so many,
as to why
I couldn't go.
They might as well
have been lies.
This you and I
both know.

No regrets but one.
I wasn't her rock on
that day.
I didn't attend your funeral,
supporting our family,
as was your way.
PLEASE FORGIVE ME.
