Not as dark as it sounds. Be grateful for what you have over Christmas
Black Christmas

Underneath the neon tubes
We try to find our mark
Demons that the night exudes
With Angels in the dark
Cast out under lurid light
As nights stretch out, draw in
'neath street lamps haze, assured sights
Festivities begin
Trees set up in market squares
As Christmas comes to life
With Halloween and all its scares
Bundled in the strife
Events that filtered through a year
Up close and on the fringe
Close to home and full of fear
… yet distant with a twinge
A twinge, a glance, a short look back
At all the things we passed
A long and winding, rusting track
… sometimes we train too fast
Barrelling from stop to stop
A fare to stay ahead
Faring, snaring every drop
when maybe, just instead
Maybe we should stop for once
… take in what we see
See the things we live amongst
The stars a top the trees
See beyond the tinsel's flare
The baubles where they hang
Cast beneath a neon glare
Fast, bought where they stand
Strung out with the fairy lights
Twinkling, they tease
Distractions from a strangers plight
and wood not seen for trees
Therapy for anxious minds
A modern madman's curse
What minds desire, hearts will find
For better or for worse
Whilst vagabonds in sleeping bags
Roses by other names
There but for the grace of rags
In doorways we're the same
Doorways leading down to dens
Distractions from the streets
Where neon tubes, they twist and bend
They spell and weave in pleats
Wrapped up in the neon light
Like heathens in the dark
Demons, Angels in the night
… we all will find our mark
