often neglected truths of big and fat Indian weddings

The Veil of Conceit
Every one said it's the big day of her life
How big, she knew not.
But the day was definitely unusual
For she realized that it could change her life
For good or for bad
Hung on the walls were glittering lights
To welcome the groom's party
Of Mother-in- law and Father-in -Law,
Of Uncles and Aunts and a dozen of cousins
And a lot more unknown faces
All clad in their best they could exhibit
Faces adorned with the ingenuous mirth of the moment
And she tried hard to imbibe their mirth
To bring that artless smile to her lips
Rising out of her carefree soul which she usually possessed
But she failed.
She failed terribly and had to wear the veil of affected joy
From behind which she could make out
From among a myriad of noises
The happy yet weary sighs of a man and wife
She could read from their mundane dressing
The anxiety, which restrained joy
And behind the veil of conceit
Once again her face trembled, managing a conscious smile.
