A Short Story about a Young Man's Discovery about his Father.
The apple flew from her hand and hit Tom sharp on the back of the head.
'Hey Sarah, what ya doing, that hurt'
'You said I was a bad shot, I guess not'
Tom picked up a pebble from the sand, looked at it for a moment, then swung his arm back; Sarah screamed!
'No Tom', He realised what he was doing and lowered his arm. He once again looked at the pebble, he was visibly shaking; Sarah came to him.
'I could have killed you Sarah; perhaps I am like my father after all'
'You aren't your father, it was a reaction that's all, and it could happen to anyone'
'But what if I'd thrown it, Sarah, what if I'd hit you with it, what does that say about me; maybe we shouldn't be together'
'Maybe this is the very reason for us being together so that I can allay your fears and doubts; they would spiral if you didn't have someone to talk to, to confide in, so I'm not going anywhere. It's early days yet, you're still adjusting to this situation, for God's sake Tom, the press is still parked outside your house.
'Why did he do it Sarah, all those people, dead, because of him, he never hurt Mum or me, how did I miss it?
'He was clever, you know that they've told you this; it was how he was able to lure his victims in, so of course he was able to hide it from you and your Mum'
'Do you know what I hate the most Sarah, that question, the one that everyone asks me; did you know? Well, of course I didn't know; how could I?'
