Too late to enter a contest, but I liked the words. A rescue team member's find.
Serendipity’s Song
The horrendous storm had passed.
Rescue teams were dispatched to neighborhoods
To search for helpless survivors
Of rain, wind and loss of electricity.
One more house to check and my day would end.
I saw such devastation and damage
To many houses in my section.
I was drawn to the backyard by the quietness
And faint scent of what I would find there.
I opened the gate and saw roses, hyacinths and lilies,
Hydrangeas and magnolia trees.
The garden looked as if it had not been touched
By human hands in a while.
But even after the storm, glorious colors stood out.
Petals had been tossed onto tall grass.
The fragrance was pure sweetness.
Siting on the seat of a child’s swing was a beautiful
Bird, a male cardinal.
He burst out into a vibrant song and then flew away.
I knew that his hope was to remain elusive from staring eyes.
His song was one of joy and no doubt his mate was close by.
Now my day was over and
It seemed that everyone had survived the storm.
