The front door stands ajar. A sliver of light shines through. A phone cries out. Its hollow sharp beeping can be heard in every room of house; yet, it continues to swing on its cord. In the dining room, thirteen chairs surround a lone table. Twelve pointed hats rest on the table: six on either side. At the head sits a crown, which waits silently for its prince. Torn open, a package of red balloons lies on the kitchen floor. Near it, a flattened icing tube bleeds crimson frosting. On the kitchen counter, just above the trampled tube, sits a birthday cake. It is frosted in blue and decorated with cartoon bear. In red, the word happy is written.
