The Man Behind the Mask

The man behind the mask,
Fear, humility, pain,
What could showing a paltry face
ever chance to gain?

The man behind the mask
who never chose to try
was so afraid of falling
that he never dared to fly.
He dreamt of many things
but nothing could console
his voice that would not sing
or his empty wasting soul.

The man behind the mask
always seemed apart
never among the strong
never among the smart
but never losing faith
ever clinging to his hope
that God would keep him safe.
Through God, was how he coped.

The man behind the mask
by God’s unending love
found a girl to love him.
His flaws she thought not of.
A spouse he soon became.
Three perfect girls were born
who lit his heart aflame
nevermore to be forlorn.

The man behind the mask
forgot all of his woes.
He was born to be their father.
To the greatest heights he rose.
Past pain had been his boon,
past err, past fail, past ache.
God built from these, the man’s cocoon.
The past for future’s sake.

The man behind the mask
whose grief and pain had passed
emerged anew from his Godly cocoon
and shed his mask… at last.
