The morning sun, its gentle rays,
illuminates the small display:
a flag that bears a dark blue star
in honor of a son who's far
from home in service to this land.

It's one of many that are seen
displayed with feelings in between
pride and concern for those away;
each loved one waiting for the day
with futures that are planned.

For some, that day will never come.
A telegram will leave them numb.
They'll stand beside a dark graveside;
a folded flag and words of pride
will replace their warmth with cold.

from home – a shining star of gold.

The legacy of sacrifice,
of having paid the highest price,
offers small comfort for their grief.
Still, they stand strong in their belief
that the cause they served was just.

In time, the grief will dissipate
for life goes on; it doesn't wait
but memories will never end
recalling words our fathers penned
for this great land: "In God We Trust."
