One way to end a date
As Walter watched me fumble with my front door key, I desperately tried to think of a way to graciously end our rotten date. I avoided looking at his hopeful eyes as the lock struggled against opening. Finally, it clicked open.

I forced a smile and turned to face Walter.

“It was lovely meeting you,” I sweetly lied. “It's still snowing, so it would probably be safer if you got on the road before it gets too bad.”

“The weather outside is frightful,” he tunefully agreed.

“I'm sure it is,” I said, starting to back into my apartment. “So you should get going before it's unsafe to drive. You know, leaving?”

“But the fire is so delightful,” he sang.

“No fire here,” I said. “I have central heating.”

“The lights are turned way down low,” he observed.

“It's time to say good-night, Walter.”

“How I'll hate going out in the storm.”

“You are not going to the next line, Walter,” I warned as I closed the door.

“But I brought some corn for popping,” he pleaded to my shut door.

“I have a toothache!” I cried as I threw the lock.

I leaned against my door, listening for any sound from the other side. I heard what sounded like a muttered,“Let it snow,” and then Walter's receding footsteps. My cat wandered over and looked at me curiously.

“I am so never dating a self-described crooner again,” I vowed to my cat.
