written for Celeste632's haiku/senryu contest. December in a country that does not snow. |
1. december is wet and trudging in with a bad mood like an umbrella 2. we pretend it snows Singaporeans only know the monsoon rains 3. kiss me under this dripping overhang. I squelch closer to my love 4. I would write you a great many poems but they wouldn't make much sense 5. I would write out the better parts of us not caught in a cold draft before spring 6. is love haiku love? I think of Osho and wilt, my verses cringing 7. half-slumbered awake we unentwine; he steals down asleep the parents 8. my body the ghost aches; left side stiffened in dawn, inexorable 9. split concrete is not good with friction. I slip you a puddle embrace 10. last month to pile all deadlines on us. I turn to blaming the weather 11. I suppose we still have a right to drink mocha with white chocolate 12. everyone hates you they don't want to wear Santa hats for the whole month 13. nobody in their right minds stays here any more for the holidays 14. Orchard Road is world- renowned for Christmas light-up (just for the tourists) 15. I don't really want to sit on your lap, white man who can't grant wishes 16. shop till you drop! signs proclaim. I halt in my tracks, fall flat on the floor 17. how does one buy gifts for a mother? how do you give her anything 18. a last month of thoughts panicking all your New Year's resolutions lost. 19. so this is Christmas and I have not done so much somewhere a cat mewls 20. there are no seasons here; I greet you anyway these are my fistfights 21. the streets are slick with gloss and we pretend every thing has been perfect 22. baby, it's cold out we should stay here where all of my relatives aren't 23. each year the locals take their migratory flights fly to cheaper lands 24. we hanker for snow winter capers here are faked; mimicked by soap flakes 25. the only present under here is the gift of no Christmas shopping. 26. this could get messy. mistletoe and alcohol may not be the best. 27. my boyfriend has flown north for the winter; he is not of this wetland 28. SAD was made up by psychologists who understood lonely. 29. step right up, they say - resolutions have gone to dust. here's a new year 30. charities seem to think you are more generous when jostled and wet. 31. what is the point of putting so many things on to then remove them? |
