A high school short story I wrote for a multi-genre research paper on psychoactive plants.

Intervention

Awaking in a foreign land, nauseous and weak, I found myself
surrounded by what seemed to be Japanese samurais. They had no facial
expressions, because they were all wearing creepy pale masks with
monster designs on them. They wear those to strike fear into their
enemies, I was unphased though. I stood up and looked around at every
single one of them, none making a move. I now realized that I had a
sword myself strapped to my belt. Confused, I continued to observe my
newfound appearance. One of the samurais approached me.

Surprisingly, I understood what he said. His
name was Tokinawa and we had ten minutes until we needed to get back
on our journey. "Sir! You were unconscious for several hours now,
we've lost precious daylight." Tokinawa reported.

"Alright... what's our destination and location again
Tokinawa?" I asked.

"Are you feeling alright sir? We're on our way to Himeji, to
take control of the castle, and we're somewhere in the midst of
China for the record." Tokinawa answered.

Confused, very confused, I slowly put it all together, or so I
thought. I'm the leader of this elite team of samurai, and we're
on our way to a battle for the sake of our homeland. "Okay, lets
move out!" I exclaimed.

My men were confused as well as I, not knowing why I suddenly lost
my memory. I had to comfort them somehow, so I spoke the truth. "Men,
I know you realize I'm not myself, I don't know what's going
on, but I've no recollection of our mission, who I am, who you are,
or anything you may think I know." I told them.

They stared at me, startled, for about thirty seconds until
Tokinawa stepped forward. I looked at him, and for some reason his
face began morphing... He slowly started to transform into some sort
of creature, first came the red eyes, then his horns, wings, claws,
he was turning into some demonic being. I had no idea what was going
on, terrified, I drew my blade and was going to decapitate the beast.
My other men came at me, also having turned into demons, I backed
away and shouted, "Stay back creatures!"

"We are not your enemies." They said, in joint unison.
"Sheathe your weapon or suffer the ultimate consequence!" What
used to be Tokinawa started speaking an ancient, evil tongue, like an
incantation or something. I was petrified by now, to the point that I
literally tipped backwards and fell, accepting their 'ultimate
consequence'. As I got closer to the ground, my eyes averted the
demons' gaze. I saw the clouds, everything had changed and I hadn't
even noticed because of what was right in front of me. They were red,
the sky was gray and the sun seemed to have a face... There were
things flying around, they were the size of airplanes but resembled
the birds I used to know.

Once I touched the ground, or what I thought was the ground
considering I was completely horizontal by now, I didn't feel
anything, I kept falling. Frightened, I maneuvered my body in a
one-eighty, and saw an entire new landscape. Flames everywhere, a
living hell. I thought I was scared of the demons I just witnessed,
but now I knew true fear. Ginormous things, the size of skyscrapers,
were lurching in the hellish plains below. I must've been less than
six hundred feet from crashing into the endless fire when one of the
demons caught a glimpse of me in the air, and warned the others of a
possible danger.

I couldn't even grasp what was happening to me, all common sense
and knowledge had been torn from my own cerebrum. Just before I met
my fate, I noticed the smell of this wretched place. You'd expect
it to smell terrible, disgusting even, or at least the smell of
millions upon millions of fires, but what I smelt was none of the
above. It was sweet, a sensation in my nose that made me feel like
this wasn't the end. Suddenly, as I plunged to my death, I felt
weightless. Something had lifted me out of the air, I looked down and
saw arms wrapped around me, and I could faintly see what looked like...
Angel wings out of the corner of my eye.

As I flew back up through the depths of hell, I looked down at the
living nightmare I almost dreamt, and what I saw was devastating. A
throne, the size of a thousand acres, and assuming this was where the
devil sat... Was the spitting image of myself. I didn't understand
what was going on, but the apparent king of hell looked just like
myself before I lived as a samurai, continuing to rise I saw glimpses
of my life flash by, things I've done... It was overwhelming, I
started crying and couldn't handle it.

Finally I looked up and saw the hole that I fell through. As soon
as we entered the gap, it wasn't the landscape I remembered, this
wasn't Earth anymore. I could see the few good things from my past
now, I was ultimately piecing the puzzle together. We stopped flying
and I was sat on a cloud. Turning around to see my savior, it was a
man with a halo and wings... An angel. I looked around before he
spoke and saw a thriving civilization, and beyond the sky was a gate
the size of the devil's throne, and the angel began to open his
mouth to speak, when everything turned black.

I was now in a house... My house... It all started flowing back, I
must've dreamt the entire thing. Until I heard a voice, "How was
it?" Someone asked.

"What?" I replied.

"The peyote, you've been asleep for hours." The person
answered. I suddenly recalled what I did before I drifted into my
sleep... I drank pure mescaline, extracted from the peyote cactus in
the Chihuahuan desert. Used by native americans to apply on their
spiritual journeys, and for medicinal purposes.

"Unexplainable, my friend... Unexplainable." I said.
