A poem written for a charity (explanation within)
Take a good look at me.
Tell me, what do you see?
Do you hone in on my difference?
Is that the only area of significance?

People stop and stare,
As I go about my life without a care.
You stand and wonder how I cope.
My job is to give people hope.

People question my intelligence.
I know I have the evidence.
There are times my ability becomes lost.
I spend my life learning, more than most.

People comment on my courageousness.
My determination is boundless.
You wonder what my future holds.
I invite you to watch as the dream unfolds.

People look at me as if I’m a lost soul.
Little do they know I’ve achieved more than one goal!
Looking past the difference, if we try,
All the judgements will go awry.

Now tell me what you see.
Who could I be?
I’ll give you a nudge,
Lest we judge!

I am a Vice President of a disability charity here in the UK (United Response). The Charity are running a project called "Postcards from the Edges", for which they looking for artwork, poetry, stories, collages or messages, from people affected by disability to express what is important to them.
This is my contribution - I'd be grateful for any comments you can offer... thank you!

Freestyle poetry. Each stanza is a quatrain and I follow an AABB rhyme scheme.
