Scrutiny of Mortality

In the days and nights I've pondered,
    I've only thought of things
          that leave mankind to wander in the bliss of meagerness.
As we think of the things we have,
    we think of the things we've lost.
The shadows of pain sink into the water,
    as the somber river flows.
