A self reflection on what a promise can truly symbolize.
All make promises. Promises to others, promises to oneself. Promises will always be made. I promise I will not forget to feed the dog. I promise we will go tomorrow. I promise, I promise, I promise. Everyday, people promise. Everyday people fulfill promises. Everyday people break promises. Maybe not even on purpose. Maybe the promise could never be. A beggar's promise. A beggar promising his child bread, with empty pockets. I promise he won't. I promise we'll make it. Some promises are insignificant to some. I promise to make my bed. I promise to be back early. But many promises hold meaning, some less subtle than others. I promise I'll be back from the war soon. I promise it will be okay. Sometimes, promises are made. But not kept. Made to satisfy the person who is being promised. Knowing that you can not avoid something, yet promising anyways, so the person is not hurt. But a promise like that is a lie. A lie that will only hurt the person more after it is broken. You promised. You promised. You promised. But you didn't keep the promise. And now your promises mean nothing. A promise is more than that. It's more than a swear, a bind. It's hope. Hope for the promised. They wait anxiously for the promise to be kept, and when it is kept, their hopes are realized. They never know just how much they hoped for it, unless it fails. And they are happy with not knowing. They are happy with having someone to trust, to have hope, to have promises. An broken promise will tear at hearts, ripping trust away. The trust that bonds people. They pull out weeds of dishonesty early, but they do this so vigilantly, the flowers that would make the best company are uprooted as well. Two things can break a person's heart: False love, and unkept promises. So all those promises made, should be kept. Promises that cannot be kept, shouldn't be made. A kept promise is one of the most trustworthy things. Always remember... Keep your promises. And your promises will be kept for you.

I promise that I will not fail myself.
