Lok'yi faces a conflict of belief
Lok’yi:

The amphibians are being hunted by Core Military personnel; this has lead to speciesism, ranging from moderate (and purely fear-induced) to severe (which is both fearful and hate ridden).

Lok’yi, in its role as a hunter-gatherer for the brood, has had several past encounters with humans, but always either short-term or from a distance.  Like other amphibians, it considers humans emotionless and predatory.  Unlike the rest of its race, it believes humans to be equal, or even superior, in intelligence.  Coming into close contact with Tam Tarnic causes it to re-evaluate its fundamental belief structure of humans.  It must also decide whether to permit Tarnic to return to the brood lair with it and its companions or to turn him loose (and face probable death in the swamp).

Returning to the brood with a human will expose Lok’yi to censure and possible expulsion from the brood.  It will also bring the juveniles into contact with a racial enemy.  However, it will also give the scientist in Lok’yi the chance to further examine humanity and possibly show the amphibians a way to combat the invaders.
