Conversation between a sailor and maiden of the sea
Mariner’s Mermaid

“Surrounded by sky and sea
With only rotting timber beneath me,
Pining for love and beauty lost
And that is why I sing.

She graced me with a memory
Of one I cannot erase.
Searching upon this lonely space
For the soul I long to embrace.

Oh, on that day I almost caught her,
Why could she not be a fisherman’s daughter?”

“My ocean is a vast, vast place
My trail is impossible for him to trace.
So to his ship- I slip
To hear of his legends of lore
Ones humans have heard times before.

But alas, instead I hear his saddened song-
Only if he knew- Do I dare confess?
To be a fisherman’s daughter
And wear a wedding dress?
Sailor, Fill my heart- I’d say
With tears that cannot dry.
For you and I are one
Until earth and sea are done.
So disregard my tail, landborne male!”

“And I will discard my woeful tale-”

His last reply was a plunge-
For love, again, has won
Now the union of earth and sea
have Begun.
